Taishi Festival Rumoi 2023: Cultural Adventure

The Rumoi Shotoku Taishi Festival, popularly known as the Rumoi Taishi Festival, is a cultural highlight in Rumoi City, Hokkaido. Honoring the legacy of Shotoku Taishi, also referred to as Prince Shotoku, this event pays homage to his pivotal role in spreading Buddhism in Japan and drafting the historic Jushichijo-Kenpo (Seventeen-Article Constitution).

This annual celebration, held during the last week of June, transforms the quiet city of Rumoi into a bustling hub of activity. Last 2022, the festival took place along Jinjashita Dori in Nishikimachi, an uphill street that brims with energy and vibrancy reminiscent of a food street—a rare sight in Rumoi. However, this year it was celebrated at the Hanazonocho District of Rumoi City.

A Feast for the Senses: Yatai Stalls and Culinary Delights

One of the main attractions of the Rumoi Taishi Festival is the dozens of yatai stalls that line the street, offering an incredible variety of food. From traditional Japanese delicacies such as okonomiyaki, takoyaki, kushiyaki, and yakisoba to international favorites like frankfurters and Turkish kebabs, there’s something to satisfy every craving.

For those with a sweet tooth, the festival is a paradise of treats. Indulge in choco bananas, candied apples, wataame (cotton candy), taiyaki, and freshly made crepes. Pair your snack with a refreshing beverage from one of the many drink stalls offering unique flavors.

This year, the festival was held on June 21-22, coinciding with my 86th week in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) under the JET Programme. The festivities kicked off around 3 PM and lasted until approximately 9 PM. I visited with my family on both days and found that the best time to experience the festival was after sunset. The warm glow of the illuminated yatai stalls added a magical ambiance to the lively street.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the festival was encountering my students from Rumoi High School. Hearing my name called out by familiar voices made me feel like a VIP, adding a personal and memorable touch to the experience.

When is the Taishi Festival celebrated?

The Rumoi Taishi Festival is celebrated every June 21st and 22nd.

Why You Should Visit

The Rumoi Taishi Festival is more than just a celebration; it’s a unique cultural experience that combines the best of Japanese traditions, mouthwatering food, and community spirit. Whether you’re a local, a traveler, or an ALT like me, this festival offers a glimpse into the vibrant culture of Rumoi and a chance to create unforgettable memories.

Getting to the Taishi Festival Rumoi venue

Rumoi City is accessible from Sapporo or Asahikawa via buses operated by companies such as Engan Bus and Chuo Bus. Upon arriving in Rumoi City, you can take the A Course Bus from the Rumoi Station bus stop and get off at the Nishikimachi bus stop. The festival venue is just a short walk from there.
