The Northernmost Cedar Forest in Japan
One of the park’s most iconic features is the northernmost
cedar forest in Japan, a living testament to resilience and dedication.
Planted in 1890 by prisoners of the Kabato Penal Colony, this forest
represents an enduring legacy. Despite Hokkaido’s cold and challenging climate,
these cedar trees have thrived for over a century, standing tall as a reminder
of the sacrifices and efforts of the men who planted them.

Team Nicerio visits Tsukigata Maruyama Park
My daughter and I visited Tsukigata Maruyama Park for
the first time on June 11, 2023, marking my 586th day here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. Our first stop was the Tsukigata Maruyama Viewing Platform,
where we enjoyed a stunning view of the town. Thankfully, a cemented road led
us to a clearing that had been turned into a convenient parking area near the
observatory. Along the way, we passed by towering cedar trees, which I later
learned were planted by inmates over a century ago. Tsukigata Maruyama Park
truly is a hidden gem worth exploring.
Tsukigata Maruyama Park’s Admission Fee
It’s FREE to park, enter, and explore Tsukigata Maruyama Park.
Tsukigata Maruyama Park’s Operating Hours
Tsukigata Maruyama Park is open 24/7, making it
accessible for visitors at any time of the day. However, if you plan to drive
to the observation deck, exercise caution at night as the road is not well-lit.
During winter, the road leading to the observation deck is often buried under
deep snow, making it impassable by vehicle. For adventurous visitors, the only
way to reach the top during this season is by snowshoeing, adding a unique
challenge to the experience.
