Lake Shumarinai Revisited 2023 - Hokkaido

Our first visit to Lake Shumarinai (朱鞠内湖) was during a family camping trip on September 24, 2022. My daughter and I returned on June 18, 2023, marking my 594th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. This time, we invited my friend and fellow ALT, Mike, making it a sort of farewell trip for him as he had completed his contract and would be leaving Hokkaido in August.

Lake Shumarinai Details

Lake Shumarinai is located in Horokanai town in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. It was created in 1943 as one of Japan's largest man-made lakes, this vast body of water spans 2,373 hectares—an area comparable to 30 Tokyo Disneylands. Its fjord-like terrain, scattered islands, and surrounding boreal forests create a picturesque landscape that feels worlds away from urban Japan.

A Unique Boreal Atmosphere

Unlike other Japanese landscapes, the relatively low-lying terrain around Lake Shumarinai gives it a boreal, almost Canadian feel. The dense forest, dotted islands, and expansive waterscape make it a destination that feels both exotic and familiar.
