Fast forward to June 18, 2023, during Father and Daughter Road Trip #3, I revisited this iconic attraction alongside my daughter and friend Mike. On this occasion, the highlight of our journey was exploring the Nayoro City Hokkoku Museum, conveniently located near the SL Snow Removal Train. Naturally, we made it part of our itinerary, snapping memorable photos of this remarkable locomotive.

If you're new to the SL Snow Removal Train "Kimaroki" (SL排雪列車「キマロキ」), here's what makes it a must-see destination for history and train enthusiasts alike.

The SL Snow Removal Train: A Legacy Preserved

Displayed in Nayoro Park at 222 Midorigaoka, Nayoro City, Hokkaido, the SL Snow Removal Train "Kimaroki" is an impressive steam locomotive exhibit. Its location on the former tracks of the JNR Nayoro Main Line connects visitors to the city's deep-rooted railway history.

Nayoro's transformation began in 1891 when it was established as a strategic hub for northern Hokkaido’s development. The city became a focal point with the opening of the Soya Main Line on September 3, 1901, and quickly grew as a transportation and cultural center. By the 1970s, steam locomotives were replaced with electric trains, marking the end of an era. Thankfully, the "Kimaroki" was preserved through a loan from Japanese National Railways and meticulously restored in October 1975.

A Train Like No Other

The SL Snow Removal Train "Kimaroki" isn't a single locomotive but a fascinating assembly of components:

  • SL59601: Manufactured by Kawasaki Shipyard on November 3, 1920.
  • Ki911 Snow Plow Truck: Built on October 20, 1930, by JNR Naebo Factory.
  • Ki604 Rotary Snow Plow: Produced on November 20, 1932, by JNR Naebo Factory.
  • SL D51398: Created by Nippon Sharyo Seisakusho on January 24, 1945.
  • Conductor Car No. 4456: Completed by Kawasaki Vehicles in 1952.

Each piece represents a vital chapter in the evolution of snow removal technology, critical to Hokkaido's railways.
