10 Things to Do in Taiki

Taiki (大樹町) is a quiet town located in Hokkaido’s Tokachi Subprefecture, Japan. Known as the “Space Town,” Taiki actively promotes experiments and flight tests in the fields of aviation and space exploration. The town’s name is believed to come from the Ainu word “tayki-us-i,” which either means “a place with many fleas.”

For those planning to visit this quiet town to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Taiki:

1. Take a photo of Taiki's manhole cover design. I have seen 1 unique manhole cover design. It is commonly found in the town.

大樹神社
Taiki Shrine

2. Visit Taiki Shrine (大樹神社) to pay your respects and offer prayers. The shrine provides a goshuin (temple stamp) that’s perfect for collectors. Since it is a joint shrine with Churui Shrine, you can also receive Churui Shrine’s goshuin here.

半田ファーム
Handa Farm

3. Visit Handa Farm (半田ファーム). While it’s primarily a cheese shop, it also offers a variety of other delicious treats. Be sure to try their rich soft cream, creamy yogurt, and of course, their famous cheese.

龍月
Ryugetsu

4. Dine at Ryugetsu (龍月), a well-loved local restaurant known for its hearty Japanese comfort food. The shop is famous for its flavorful beef bowls, savory ankake dishes, and perfectly cooked yakisoba. Each meal is prepared with care, offering that satisfying homemade taste that locals keep coming back for. Since it’s a popular spot, especially among residents, expect it to get quite busy during lunchtime — but the wait is definitely worth it.

柏林公園
Hakurin Park

5. Stroll around Hakurin Park (柏林公園) and enjoy its peaceful atmosphere. Aside from taking a relaxing walk, you can also see the preserved SL 59611 steam locomotive displayed within the park grounds. Every April, the park comes alive with the vibrant colors of wisteria in full bloom, creating a picturesque scene. Autumn is equally stunning, with the foliage transforming the park into a canvas of warm, golden hues.

カムイコタン公園キャンプ場
Kamuikotan Park Camping Ground

6. Pitch a tent and spend the night at Kamuikotan Park Camping Ground (カムイコタン公園キャンプ場). Surrounded by lush nature, it’s the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the outdoors. Just 50 meters from the campsite flows the beautiful Rekifune River, adding to the area’s serene charm. The campground becomes quite lively during the camping season, so expect a fun and friendly atmosphere among fellow campers.

大樹町郷土資料館
Taiki Local History Museum

7. Visit the Taiki Local History Museum (大樹町郷土資料館) to learn about the rich history and culture of the town. Located along the national highway, just a short drive from downtown Taiki, the museum is housed in a building that was once an elementary school. Inside, you’ll find fascinating exhibits that showcase Taiki’s local heritage, from its early development to its connection with modern space exploration.

道の駅 コスモール大樹
Roadside Station Cosmall Taiki

8. Visit Roadside Station Cosmall Taiki (道の駅 コスモール大樹), a convenient stop that doubles as the town’s local supermarket. Explore the space-themed displays that celebrate Taiki’s connection to aviation and space exploration. Be sure to pick up the roadside station stamp for your collection, a fun keepsake from your visit.

大樹町宇宙交流センター SORA
Taiki Town Space Exchange Center SORA

9. Visit the Taiki Town Space Exchange Center SORA (大樹町宇宙交流センター SORA). It is an exhibition facility where you can learn about Taiki Town's space town development, which began in 1985. Taiki Town is home to a variety of aerospace experiments, including JAXA's scientific balloon and aircraft experiments. You can also get up close and personal with an actual Interstellar Technologies rocket. We will also introduce the present and future of Hokkaido Spaceport, which began full-scale operation in 2021.

晩成温泉
Bansei Onsen

10.  Pitch a tent and spend the night at Bansei Hot Spring Camping Ground (晩成温泉キャンプ場). Before turning in for the night, don’t miss a relaxing soak at the famed Bansei Onsen (晩成温泉). The indoor onsen offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and is enriched with special natural ingredients that make the bath especially soothing. For extra relaxation, the facility also features a Jacuzzi and sauna, perfect for unwinding after a day in nature.
