10 Things to Do in 蘭越町
10 Things to Do in Rankoshi

Rankoshi (蘭越町) is a town situated in the Shiribeshi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The town is an agricultural town with around 3,000 hectares of farmland. The cleanest river in Japan, Shiribetsu, also flows through the town. The name Rankoshi originates from the Ainu word "ranko-us-i," which means a place with many katsura trees.

For those planning to visit this laid-back agricultural town to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Rankoshi:

Rankoshi manhole covers

1. Take a picture of the manhole covers of Rankoshi. So far, I have seen 2 unique manhole covers, which are both common around the town.

蘭越 目名八幡神社
Rankoshi Menahachiman Shrine

2. Visit the Rankoshi Menahachiman Shrine (蘭越 目名八幡神社), the main shrine of Rankoshi. You can visit at any time of day to offer your prayers and pay your respects. If you're collecting goshuin (shrine stamps), be sure to get one from this sacred site. You can also get the goshuin of the Otori Shrine of Kuromatsunai here.

道の駅 らんこし·ふるさとの丘
Rankoshi Roadside Station “Rankoshi Furusato no Oka”

3. Stop by the Rankoshi Roadside Station “Rankoshi Furusato no Oka” (道の駅 らんこし·ふるさとの丘). This is one of the two roadside stations of Rankoshi. It might be small, but this roadside station sells numerous locally harvested produce, including the town’s famed white rice.

道の駅 シェルプラザ・港
Rankoshi Roadside Station “Shell Plaza Minato”

4. Stop by at the Rankoshi Roadside Station “Shell Plaza Minato” (道の駅 シェルプラザ・港). This is one of the two roadside stations of Rankoshi. You can buy some fresh produce here, including rice harvested from the town. What makes this roadside stand out is that it is conveniently located beside the Rankoshi Shell Museum, which is one of the must-visit destinations in town.

6. Dine at Bonta (街の茶屋). This syokudo and teishoku restaurant offers delicious and affordable Japanese food. The onigiri and butajiru are a must-try. The restaurant also sells Rankoshi's famed white rice.

尻別川ランラン公園
Shiribetsu River Ran Ran Park

7. Visit and relax at Shiribetsu River Ran Ran Park (尻別川ランラン公園). It is located right beside the Shiribetsu River, known as Japan's cleanest river. This expansive riverside park offers stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing stroll by the water, especially during spring when the sakura trees are in full bloom, creating a picturesque scene that draws visitors from near and far.

蘭越町貝の館
Rankoshi Shell Museum

8. Discover the impressive collection of hundreds of shells at the Rankoshi Shell Museum (蘭越町貝の館). The museum features a diverse array of shells from Japan as well as from across the globe, offering a fascinating glimpse into the world of marine life.

ニセコ湯本温泉大湯沼
Yumoto Hot Spring Sulfur Pond

9. Take a dip at the onsen of Yukichichibu (蘭越町交流促進センター雪秩父). Natural spring baths & a mud pool rich in sulfur with views of the surrounding countryside. You will also be able to see the Yumoto Hot Spring Sulfur Pond (ニセコ湯本温泉大湯沼) behind the onsen facility.

紅葉の滝
Momiji Falls

10. Embark on a hike to visit Momiji Falls (紅葉の滝), a stunning destination that is especially beautiful in autumn when the vibrant foliage enhances the scenery. However, be cautious during your visit, as reports indicate that the path leading to the falls is partially overgrown with bushes, and there are several slippery spots along the way.

I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Rankoshi gave you an idea and inspiration to visit this laid-back agricultural town in the Shiribeshi Subprefecture of Hokkaido.
