Rankoshi (蘭越町) is a town situated in the Shiribeshi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The town is an agricultural town with around 3,000 hectares of farmland. The cleanest river in Japan, Shiribetsu, also flows through the town. The name Rankoshi originates from the Ainu word "ranko-us-i," which means a place with many katsura trees.

1. Take a picture of the manhole covers of Rankoshi. So far, I have seen 2 unique manhole covers, which are both common around the town.

2. Visit the Rankoshi Menahachiman Shrine (蘭越 目名八幡神社), the main shrine of Rankoshi. You can visit at any time of day to offer your prayers and pay your respects. If you're collecting goshuin (shrine stamps), be sure to get one from this sacred site. You can also get the goshuin of the Otori Shrine of Kuromatsunai here.

3. Stop by the Rankoshi Roadside Station “Rankoshi Furusato no Oka” (道の駅 らんこし·ふるさとの丘). This is one of the two roadside stations of Rankoshi. It might be small, but this roadside station sells numerous locally harvested produce, including the town’s famed white rice.

4. Stop by at the Rankoshi Roadside Station “Shell Plaza Minato” (道の駅 シェルプラザ・港). This is one of the two roadside stations of Rankoshi. You can buy some fresh produce here, including rice harvested from the town. What makes this roadside stand out is that it is conveniently located beside the Rankoshi Shell Museum, which is one of the must-visit destinations in town.

5. Pitch a tent and stay overnight at Furusato no Oka Campsite (ふるさとの丘キャンプ場). The campsite is vast and clean. You can also rent a bungalow here.

6. Dine at Bonta (街の茶屋). This syokudo and teishoku restaurant offers delicious and affordable Japanese food. The onigiri and butajiru are a must-try. The restaurant also sells Rankoshi's famed white rice.

7. Visit and relax at Shiribetsu River Ran Ran Park (尻別川ランラン公園). It is located right beside the Shiribetsu River, known as Japan's cleanest river. This expansive riverside park offers stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing stroll by the water, especially during spring when the sakura trees are in full bloom, creating a picturesque scene that draws visitors from near and far.

8. Discover the impressive collection of hundreds of shells at the Rankoshi Shell Museum (蘭越町貝の館). The museum features a diverse array of shells from Japan as well as from across the globe, offering a fascinating glimpse into the world of marine life.

10. Embark on a hike to visit Momiji Falls (紅葉の滝), a stunning destination that is especially beautiful in autumn when the vibrant foliage enhances the scenery. However, be cautious during your visit, as reports indicate that the path leading to the falls is partially overgrown with bushes, and there are several slippery spots along the way.
