      Hands-On Experiences for Visitors

For those looking to dive deeper into the history of Ishikari, the museum offers a variety of hands-on activities. Create your own canned goods using a manual machine, a tribute to Ishikari’s history as the site of Japan’s first canned food factory. Visitors can personalize cans by placing treasures, gifts, or beach finds like shells and sand inside. Turn the handle and in just one minute, you’ll have a unique canned souvenir! To complete the experience, add a label reminiscent of the salmon cans from the Hokkaido Colonization Bureau’s era.

On June 11, 2023, my daughter and I visited the Ishikari Sand Dunes Wind Museum for the first time, celebrating my 586th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. During our visit, we not only enjoyed discovering the history of Ishikari City but also had fun creating a time capsule through the "Canning Activity”, which we were able to bring home as a memorable keepsake.
