A Rich History Behind the Springs

The hot spring’s location has an interesting history. Originally part of Sawada Park, the site underwent multiple developments over the years, including being acquired by Obihiro Fuji Concrete Co., Ltd. and later Daewoo Corporation. The hot spring was officially drilled in 1986, reaching a temperature of 43.3°C at a depth of 1,212 meters, with a flow rate of 1.7 tons per minute.

After several renovations and reopening periods, Satsunai Garden Hot Springs now features modern amenities while preserving its historical charm. In December 2023, the outdoor space was enhanced with a barrel sauna and high- and low-temperature tent saunas, offering visitors a relaxing nature retreat.

My family and I visited Satsunai Garden Hot Spring for the first time on November 4, 2023, which was the second day of our three-day Culture Day Road Trip. This marked my 733rd day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. This place was the last destination on our itinerary for the day. It’s also a perfect way to wrap up the second day of our adventure – with a relaxing onsen dip.
