Takikawa is home to two main types of nanohana: the Kizaki no Natane variety, known for its use in producing high-quality rapeseed oil, and the Haru no Kagayaki variety, often cultivated as a food source. These fields of blooming canola flowers are among the largest in Japan, and their striking yellow hues create a picturesque backdrop every May.

On May 27, 2023, my family and I had the pleasure of visiting the Takikawa Nanohana Festival for the first time. It marked my 572nd day in Japan as an ALT with the JET Programme. We arrived during the final days of the festival, and fortunately, the flowers were still in full bloom. We were able to capture stunning photos of the vibrant yellow rapeseed fields. I’m already looking forward to returning in the future.
