Rainbow Bridge Details
Rainbow Bridge stands out as a unique double-decker bridge,
a rarity even across Japan. Its charm is further enhanced by a triangular roof
gate that evokes the magic of a fairy tale world. If you’re lucky, you might
even catch a glimpse of a rainbow—a sight that gives the bridge its name.

A Bridge with History
Originally constructed in 1923, the bridge served as part of
the Nagisabe Line of the Japanese National Railways. However, its function
ceased when the railway line was discontinued in 1985. Driven by the passion of
the local townspeople who wished to preserve this historic iron bridge, it was
transformed into its current form in 1990 as part of the Hometown
Revitalization Project.

A Rare Sight: Double-Deck Design and Rainbow Magic
The Rainbow Bridge is not only visually stunning but also a structural marvel. Its two-story design offers visitors different ways to enjoy its features. The bridge earned its name from the unique water discharge system on the first floor, which releases water like a waterfall. When sunlight hits the mist, it creates a dazzling rainbow effect, adding to the bridge’s allure.
Top Attractions on the Bridge
The second floor of the bridge is a fantastic spot for sightseeing. It provides panoramic views of Shibazakura Takinoue Park and the scenic Sakuru River and Shokotsu River. Adding to the fun, visitors can slide down from the second floor to the first floor—a delight for children and adults alike!
Team Nicerio visits Rainbow Bridge
My family and I visited Rainbow Bridge for the first time on May 28, 2023, during our Flower Festival Road Trip Part 2. It marked my 573rd day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. The bridge wasn’t originally on our itinerary, but its interesting design caught our attention, and we were pleasantly surprised by its uniqueness. My daughter immediately took the chance to play on the slides, while I enjoyed the stunning view of Takinoue Shibazakura Park, Shokotsu River, and Sakuru River below. It turned out to be a memorable stop, adding an unexpected highlight to our day.
