Japan Diaries 4: Week 96

Week 96: August 28 – September 1, 2023

Day 665: August 28, 2023

Monday – Rumoi

It’s the start of my 96th weekend as an ALT under the JET Programme. Today, it would be mostly cloudy according to the weather forecast. Thankfully, the temperature would only be around 27 to 28 degrees.

Like my usual Monday work schedule, I’m back at Rumoi High School. Before work, I checked essays from Matsuda-sensei's classes. I'm happy to share that a lot of the students wrote good essays. This marked an improvement from the first time I saw their writings months back.

After work, I spent time bonding with my children. It's a perfect way to relax after a long day at work. 

Day 666: August 29, 2023

Tuesday – Rumoi

It’s going to be a sunny day, but thank goodness it’s getting cooler by the day. That’s why I biked to Rumoi High School to report for work.

Today marked the beginning of the term exams, meaning no collaborative tasks on my plate. My focus was solely on diving into Japanese studies with Genki. The journey to mastering the language continues.

At 2:15 PM, I finished work and submitted my nenkyu. Then, I had a dental appointment in the afternoon with my wife. We also went to the Engan Bus Sales Office to buy my Monthly Moekko Free Tickets supply. Later, we stopped at Rumoi City Hall to take care of Kai's paperwork and sorted out his My Number Card.

Ebata Dental Clinic

Our tasks aligned perfectly with my dental appointment at Ebata Dental Clinic around 4:30 PM. A snag in the clinic's water line meant my tooth couldn't be fully fixed by Dr. Ebata. Still, an X-ray and a temporary filling were managed for my cracked tooth, which calls for a root canal.

Parasite: The Maxim

Wrapping up the day's events, my daughter and I enjoyed some quality time watching episodes of the anime "Parasite: The Maxim." A nice end to an eventful day.

Day 667: August 30, 2023

Wednesday – Haboro

Haboro High School 8.30.2023

It’s going to be a sunny but windy day according to the weather forecast. For today’s work, I’m heading to Haboro High School. It’s my 7th visit for the school year 2023 – 2024. For this trip, I’m using my 2-day Moekko Free Ticket.

4th period – Memories of Summer Vacation Activity @ 1st year of Watanabe-sensei
5th period – Reading and Writing Test @ 3rd year of Watanabe-sensei

Day 668: August 31, 2023

Thursday – Rumoi

It’s a sunny day today, and unlike my usual work weeks, I won’t be going on a school visit trip today. Instead, I’m reporting back to Rumoi High School. It’s examination week, so I don’t have any collaboration work today. Instead, I focused on studying Japanese.

It was very different when I got back home today, as my daughter is on an overnight school trip to Takikawa City. In a way, I missed having my movie marathon buddy around. Regardless, it was a busy night as I spent it taking care of my son.

Day 669: September 1, 2023

Friday – Tomamae

Tomamae Commercial High School 9.1.2023

It’s a rainy Friday. For today’s school visit, I’m heading to Tomamae Commercial High School. It has been a while since I last visited this school, as a matter of fact, my last visit was still in July. This visit is my 11th for the school year 2023 – 2024. For this trip, I used my 2-day Skip Moekko Free Ticket.

I didn’t have any collaboration work today as the students were busy preparing for their activity tomorrow. I spent my time editing the draft of the speech of the contestants from the Rumoi English Club for their upcoming speech contest.

The Last Kingdom

To wrap up the day, I watched the last few episodes of the last season of The Last Kingdom.

The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die

I also watched the tie-in film The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, which closes the series. For me, the series was truly amazing, but as for the film, I feel that it was rushed, as there were a lot of missing characters and questions that arose after watching it.


Overall, this week wasn’t that busy with regard to collaboration work, but still, there was a lot of paperwork to accomplish. Outside of work, I had plenty of time with the family, particularly with Kai.
