What Makes Nakayoshi Park Special?
At first glance, Nakayoshi Park offers the usual park
amenities: open spaces perfect for running and playing, along with children’s
play equipment like swings and slides. However, what truly sets this park apart
is its historical centerpiece—the preserved D51311 steam locomotive.

The Story of D51311
The D51311 locomotive is more than just a display; it’s a
slice of Japan’s railway history. Built on October 10, 1939, at the
Hitachi Kasado Factory, this iconic steam engine once roared through the Sekihoku
Main Line, serving as a vital mode of transportation. After decades of
service, the D51311 retired on September 30, 1975, and found its
permanent home in Nakayoshi Park.

While the locomotive is not sheltered and is exposed to the
elements, it remains in remarkable condition thanks to regular maintenance by
the local government. The fresh coat of paint ensures it remains a standout
feature, drawing visitors eager to glimpse a piece of the past.
Ideal for Families and History Buffs
Nakayoshi Park is a great spot for kids to burn off energy
or for families to enjoy some downtime. On clear days, it’s perfect for running
around or relaxing. However, be prepared for the summer heat as the park has
limited tall trees for shade.

Team Nicerio visits Nakayoshi Park
My family and I visited Nakayoshi Park for the first time on September 16, 2023, during the first day of our “3-Day Respect of the Aged Road Trip,” which happens to be my 684th day here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme.

Aside from admiring the preserved D51311 steam locomotive, we also spent
some time here, as this is where we had our breakfast after a long drive. The
sun was already up when we arrived, but thankfully, there was a bench with some
shade on it. Regardless, we still enjoyed our time in the park, and hopefully, the local government will plant more trees on the park grounds.
