The History of the Aioi Line
The Aioi Line, inaugurated on November 15, 1925, once connected Bihoro and Kitami-Aioi. For 60 years, it served as the lifeline of Tsubetsu Town, facilitating the transport of forest and agricultural products that were pivotal to the area’s growth. At its peak, the line saw dozens of freight cars transporting goods, making a significant impact on the local economy.

Unfortunately, due to financial challenges, the line was
decommissioned on April 1, 1985, but its legacy continues through Aioi Railway
Park.

Station Cafe Walnut Forest
Adding a modern touch to the historical setting, the Station Cafe Walnut Forest opened in July 2016 within the old station building.
Here, guests can savor home-roasted coffee made from organic beans, paired with
handmade scones crafted from locally grown wheat and organic milk. The café’s
charm and locally sourced menu make it a favorite spot for visitors.
Challenges and Community Efforts
Despite its charm, Aioi Railway Park faces challenges due to
aging infrastructure and corrosion. Originally maintained by community
volunteers, the park’s upkeep is now managed by the Aioi Promotion
Corporation, with support from Tsubetsu Town. Crowdfunding campaigns and
preservation initiatives aim to secure its future and ensure that this
invaluable piece of history remains accessible to future generations.
Team Nicerio visits the Aioi Railway Park
My family and I visited Aioi Railway Park for
the first time on September 16, 2023, during the first day of our “3-Day
Respect of the Aged Road Trip,” which happens to be my 684th day here in
Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. Although there’s nothing much to do in
the park, we contented ourselves with taking photos of the preserved trains
here.
Aioi Railway Park Admission Fee
It’s FREE to enter and explore Aioi Railway Park. Parking is
also FREE as long as you park at the Tsubetsu Roadside Station.
Aioi Railway Park Operating Hours
Aioi Railway Park is open 24/7.
Why Visit Aioi Railway Park
Getting to Aioi Railway Park
There are no buses or trains that go directly to Tsubetsu Roadside Station. While taking a taxi from Tsubetsu, Bihoro, or Kitami City is possible, it can be quite costly. The most practical and affordable option is to travel by rental or private car.
