10 Things to Do in Tsubetsu

Tsubetsu (津別町) is a picturesque town located inland within the Okhotsk Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. Known for its lush landscapes, the town is 86% covered by forest and has been designated as a certified forest therapy base. The name "Tsubetsu" is thought to originate from the Ainu term "tu-pet" (meaning "two rivers"), referencing the Tsubetsu River and the Abashiri River, which flow alongside each other and converge north of the current town center. Alternatively, according to the "Origin of Hokkaido Station Names" published by the Japanese National Railways Hokkaido General Administration in 1973, the name is also interpreted as "a river at the base of the mountain."
