A Shrine Rooted in Sacred Tradition

The origins of the shrine date back to May 1804, when the Suhara clan enshrined it to safeguard the island and ensure divine protection for a local tournament. Its sacred role grew over time, and in 1876, it was officially recognized as a village shrine, marking its spiritual importance to the community.

A Sacred Space in Harmony with Nature

In 1903, the shrine was relocated from its original coastal position at Benten Misaki to its current hilltop site, an area chosen to preserve its sanctity and protect it from the elements. Reconstructed in the elegant Ryuzo architectural style, the shrine became a symbol of divine harmony and resilience. Further honors followed, including its designation as a Shinsenheifukuryokyushinjinja in 1918 and recognition as a religious corporation in 1946.

Team Nicerio visits Teuri Itsukushima Shrine

On June 25, 2023, during our Father and Daughter Road Trip 4, my daughter and I, along with the Tomamae Gang, visited Teuri Itsukushima Shrine as part of our #Hokkaido179 travel goals. This visit marked my 601st day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme.

One of our traditions when exploring a new place is to visit a local shrine. During our visit, we took a moment to offer prayers, pay our respects, and make a wish—a meaningful ritual that connects us to the places we explore.
