A Birdwatcher’s Paradise
The area surrounding Akaiwa Observatory is a haven for
seabirds, particularly Auklets. The surrounding cliffs are home to numerous
nesting holes, making it one of the key breeding grounds for these fascinating
birds. From May to July, visitors have the unique opportunity to observe
Auklets raising their young in their natural habitat. The experience of
witnessing these seabirds up close is a highlight for birdwatchers and wildlife
lovers.

At dusk, the spectacle intensifies as flocks of
approximately 800,000 Auklets return to their nests. Watching these birds soar
across the sky as the sun sets is nothing short of magical. The sight of so
many birds flying in unison, silhouetted against the fading light, is an
unforgettable experience.

On June 25, 2023, during our Father and Daughter Road Trip 4, my daughter and I, together with the Tomamae Gang, visited Akaiwa Observatory as part of our #Hokkaido179 travel goals. This visit also marked my 601st day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. The observatory was likely the highlight of our trip—it offered a stunning view of the sea and the iconic Akaiwa Rock Formation, along with thousands of seabird nests, making it a truly memorable experience.

It’s FREE to enter and explore Akaiwa Observatory. Parking is also FREE. However, it’s on a first-come, first-served basis.
Akaiwa Observatory Operating Hours
Akaiwa Observatory is open 24/7. However, it’s better to visit during the day as the place is not well-lit at night.

Getting to Akaiwa Observatory
 Reaching Teuri Island is a breeze, thanks to its well-connected ferry services. Departing from the port at Haboro, two ferries
provide access to this serene island:
Ororon 2: A
relaxing 60-minute journey that offers stunning views of the Sea of Japan.
Sunrise 2: A
faster option, taking just 35 minutes to reach the island.
Seasonal Schedules:
Winter: The
Ororon 2 operates with one trip per day.
Peak Tourist
Season (August): Both ferries ramp up service, running three trips daily to
accommodate the influx of visitors.
Exploring the Island
Once you arrive, getting around Teuri is simple. You can
rent a bike, e-bike, motorbike, or car at Wakomaru Bicycle Rental or Ororon
Rental near Teuri Ferry Terminal. Akaiwa Observatory is on the westernmost tip
of the island. Just follow National Road 548.
