Cape Kannon Observatory or Kannonmizaki Observatory (観音岬展望台) is an observatory on the northwestern coast of Teuri Island. It is located on Teuri Island of the town of Haboro, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan.

Perched atop Cape Kannon, this observation deck provides an unspoiled vantage point of the vast sea stretching out before you, framed by dramatic cliffs below. As you gaze across the landscape, you’ll notice the impressive cliffs and the many black-tailed gulls nesting along the edges, adding a touch of natural beauty to the scene.

To reach the Cape Kannon Observatory, take a detour off the main road that circles Teuri Island. Follow a side road that leads you to a convenient parking lot, where you can leave your vehicle before continuing your journey on foot. From there, a well-maintained promenade will take you along a peaceful walk toward the observation deck.

At an altitude of 142 meters, the Cape Kannon Observatory is situated high on the cliffs of Cape Kannon, offering an expansive view of the Sea of Japan. As you walk the path, the scenery gradually unfolds, with the cliffs to your side and majestic birds soaring in the sky. The best part is the incredible sight of the black-tailed gulls, which nest in the cliffs, providing a truly unique experience.

The Views and Experience: Majestic Cliffs and Seabird Watching

Once you reach the top, you are greeted by the observation deck, where you can take in sweeping views of the cliffs and the surrounding coastline. Although the visibility of the cliffs directly below is limited, the sweeping view of the vast sea before you more than makes up for it. The panoramic sight of the Sea of Japan, with its endless horizon, is a photographer’s dream.

At dusk, the scene becomes even more magical as the cries of the black-tailed gulls fill the air. The peaceful yet lively atmosphere, with the birds gliding over the cliffs, makes for an unforgettable sensory experience. On June 25, 2023, during our Father and Daughter Road Trip 4, my daughter and I, along with the Tomamae Gang, visited Cape Kannon Observatory as part of our #Hokkaido179 travel goals. This visit coincided with my 601st day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. The observatory was the final stop on our tour of Teuri Island, where we enjoyed stunning views of the Teuri Lighthouse and Yagishiri Island. Although we couldn’t stay long as we needed to catch the last ferry back to Haboro, we managed to capture beautiful photos of the cape.

It’s FREE to enter and enjoy the view from Cape Kannon Observatory. Parking is also FREE but limited, and it’s on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cape Kannon Observatory is open 24/7. However, it is highly recommended that you visit in the morning as this place is not well-lit at night.

Getting to Cape Kannon Observatory

Reaching Teuri Island is a breeze, thanks to its well-connected ferry services. Departing from the port at Haboro, two ferries provide access to this serene island:

Ororon 2: A relaxing 60-minute journey that offers stunning views of the Sea of Japan.

Sunrise 2: A faster option, taking just 35 minutes to reach the island.

Seasonal Schedules:

Winter: The Ororon 2 operates with one trip per day.

Peak Tourist Season (August): Both ferries ramp up service, running three trips daily to accommodate the influx of visitors.

Exploring the Island

Once you arrive, getting around Teuri is simple. You can rent a bike, e-bike, motorbike, or car at Wakomaru Bicycle Rental or Ororon Rental near Teuri Ferry Terminal. Cape Kannon Observatory is on the northern coast of the island. Just follow National Road 548 on a counterclockwise route.
