The name "Teuri" has its roots in the Ainu language, with interpretations meaning either “fish back” or “leg.” This connection to Japan’s indigenous culture adds depth to the island’s allure, making it more than just a natural haven but also a cultural landmark.

A Haven for Seabirds

Teuri Island is internationally renowned for its role as a breeding ground for an array of seabirds, including the common guillemot, Rhinoceros Auklet, Spectacled Guillemot, Japanese cormorant, and slate-backed gull. Its northwest coast, lined with dramatic cliffs, serves as a sanctuary for these species, earning the island the designation of a Natural Monument on August 8, 1939.

Moreover, BirdLife International has recognized Teuri Island as an Important Bird Area (IBA) for its critical role in seabird conservation. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching in one of Japan’s most pristine environments, perfect for photography and ecological exploration.

Wildlife Conservation Efforts

As part of Japan’s Wildlife Protection Areas since March 31, 1982, Teuri Island has implemented innovative measures to protect its delicate ecosystem.

Haboro Town initiated a stray cat population control program in April 2012 to safeguard seabird colonies from predation, ensuring the balance of this unique habitat.

From Forest Fires to Flourishing Greenery

Teuri Island’s lush greenery today is the result of decades of dedication to land restoration. During the Meiji era, settlers and frequent forest fires devastated the island’s forests.

    Team Nicerio visits Teuri Island

On June 25, 2023, during our Father and Daughter Road Trip 4, my daughter and I, along with the Tomamae Gang, went on a tour around Teuri Island. It was my 601st day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. We rented a car and drove around the island. The island was the last island that we visited for the day after exploring Yagishiri Island.

    Why Visit Teuri Island?

Teuri Island, a hidden gem in Japan's Hokkaido region, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and wildlife conservation. Known as a seabird paradise, it is home to rare species like the common guillemot and Rhinoceros Auklet, earning its designation as a Natural Monument and Important Bird Area. With dramatic cliffs, lush greenery, and 12 kilometers of stunning coastline, the island is perfect for birdwatching, hiking, and photography. Teuri also has cultural significance, with its name rooted in the Ainu language, and it stands as a testament to resilience, having undergone successful reforestation after deforestation during the Meiji era. Now part of the Shokanbetsu-Teuri-Yagishiri Quasi-National Park, it’s an ideal destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
