The views from the “Road to the Sky” Observatory are extraordinary. To the
right, vast fields and windbreaks stretch out, framing the Sea of Okhotsk in
the distance. To the left, the straight road disappears into the horizon,
giving the impression of a path leading to the heavens. This unique effect,
created by the road’s elevation and perspective, blends human ingenuity with
natural beauty.Road to the Sky Photos
Photography Tips and Vantage Points

For photographers, the best spot is further up the hill on Minami-san-go. The
summit offers a more dramatic view of the road and its surrounding scenery.
However, parking near this area is limited, and the road can be surprisingly
busy. It’s advisable to park at the “Road to the Sky” Observatory and walk to
the best vantage points for a safer and more enjoyable experience.
Team Nicerio visits Road to the Sky
My family and I drove from one end of the Road to the Sky to
the other, starting from Taiei District until Minehama District. Once we reached
the Minehama District end of the road, we made sure to take commemorative
photos, as this place is one of the highlights of our trip today. We visited the
Road to the Sky for the first time on September 17, 2023, during the second day
of our “3-Day Respect for the Aged Road Trip.” This memorable visit also marked
my 685th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme.
Road to the Sky Admission Fee
Visiting and driving along the Road to the Sky is completely
free of charge. Additionally, there is no fee to park in the designated parking
area in the Minehama District. However, parking is limited, so as a courtesy to
others, avoid leaving your vehicle there for an extended period.
Road to the Sky Operating Hours
The Road to the Sky is open 24/7.
Why Visit the Road to the Sky
The Road to Heaven is a favorite destination for bikers, cyclists, and photography enthusiasts alike. Its serene atmosphere and remarkable vistas make it a perfect escape for those seeking tranquility and inspiration.
Getting to Road to the Sky
Reaching the Road to the Sky is simple and rewarding. From
Shari Town, head east on National Highway 334 for about 10 kilometers toward
the Shiretoko Peninsula. When the highway curves left, continue straight onto
the local road, Minami-san-go. As you ascend the slope, you’ll find the
“Nameless Observatory,” a charming wooden observation deck near the top of the
hill on the left side of the road.
