This awe-inspiring waterfall cascades down a rugged cliff, creating a spectacular natural display that captivates visitors year-round. Its name originates from the Ainu term "O-Shunku-Ushi," meaning "a place where Yezo spruce trees grow in clusters," reflecting the area's deep cultural and natural heritage.

A Scenic Wonder with Unique Seasonal Charms

At approximately 30 meters wide and with a drop of about 80 meters, Oshinkoshin Falls is one of the largest and most celebrated waterfalls in Shiretoko. The waterfall earns its nickname, "Twin Beauties," as its flow splits into two streams midway, creating a visually striking scene. Recognized as one of the "100 Best Waterfalls in Japan," its raw power and elegance attract countless visitors every year.

Winter reveals a magical, frozen version of the falls, where partially iced-over streams create a serene and rustic beauty. From the observation deck above the falls, visitors can also admire the expansive views of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Shiretoko Mountain Range, with drift ice blanketing the ocean during colder months.

My family and I stopped at Oshinkoshin Falls for the first time on September 17, 2023, during the second day of our “3-Day Respect for the Aged Road Trip.” This visit also marked my 685th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. I made sure to include this scenic falls in our itinerary for our trip to Shiretoko Five Lakes, as I have heard about it from one of my JTEs who loves taking pictures of waterfalls. He said that it was one of the most beautiful in Hokkaido, and I agree with him.
