Kiritappu Shrine Details
Kiritappu Shrine is a revered spiritual site
dedicated to the gods Owatatsumi-no-Mikoto, Omononushi-no-Mikoto,
and Itsukushima-hime-no-Mikoto—deities deeply connected to the sea and
fishing. Historically, these gods were privately worshipped by influential
local figures, Matsumura Tomijiro and Yoshida Meitaro, who prayed
for the prosperity and safety of the fishing industry, a vital livelihood for
the community.

Origins and Establishment
Before Kiritappu Shrine was officially established, the
residents of Kiritappu lacked a formal place of worship. In 1903, the
villagers came together to petition for an official shrine, hoping to foster
community happiness and bless the local fishing trade. Their efforts culminated
in the construction of the shrine building and office by 1907.

Growth and Renovations
In 1948, Kiritappu Shrine was incorporated as a religious corporation, strengthening its organizational foundation. Over the following decades, the shrine underwent several significant renovations, including the renovation and completion of the shrine office in 1963, the construction of a brand-new shrine building in 1991, and the addition of a new office along with grounds improvements in 1992. These developments were celebrated in 1993 with a grand festival and commemorative ceremony, held in conjunction with the enthronement of the Heisei Emperor.

Team Nicerio visits Kiritappu Shrine
My family and I visited Kiritappu Shrine for
the first time on September 18, 2023, during the third day of our “3-Day
Respect of the Aged Road Trip,” which happens to be my 686th day here in
Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. As part of our Hokkaido 179 journey—a
goal to visit all 179 municipalities in the prefecture—we made it a priority to
visit at least one of the main shrines in each municipality to pay our respects
and offer prayers.

Getting to Kiritappu Shrine
Getting to Hamanaka can be a bit of a challenge, as the local Kiritappu–Akkeshi Line bus, operated by the town, runs only on weekdays (Monday to Friday). The bus departs from Nenohi Park (Ayamegahara) in the morning and stops at Kiritappu Onsen Yuyu.
From there, it’s about a 1-kilometer walk to Kiritappu Shrine.
For updated fares and bus timetables, please check the official website of Hamanaka. [Here's the LINK.]
