10 Things to Do in Nemuro City

10 Things to Do in Nemuro City
Nemuro (根室市), the easternmost city of Japan, is located in Hokkaido's Nemuro Subprefecture. The city is known for the largest catches of saury in all of Japan. The city's name is believed to originate from the Ainu word "nimuoro," which means “a place where trees grow thick”.
For those planning to visit Japan’s
easternmost city to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in
Nemuro City:

Nemuro City's manhole cover designs
1. Take a photo of Nemuro City's manhole cover
designs. So far, I have seen two unique manhole cover designs, which are commonly
found in the city.

Nemuro's Pokémon manhole cover
2. Capture a photo of Nemuro's Pokémon
manhole cover, installed in the grounds of Meiji Park. The design showcases
Alolan Vulpix and Mr. Rime.
3. Visit Nemuro Izumo Shrine (根室出雲神社), one of the
town's main shrines, located in the heart of the town. It is the easternmost
Izumo shrine. You can get a goshuin here for your collection.
4.

Swan 44 Nemuro Roadside Station
5. Visit the Swan 44 Nemuro Roadside Station (道の駅 スワン44ねむろ). This roadside station is located at the lakeside of Lake
Furen, hence it has a scenic view of the lake. There is also a restaurant here
that serves the escalope, one of the city's specialties. If you
collect roadside station stamps, don’t miss visiting this roadside station.
6. Walk around and explore Cape Ochiishi (落石岬). There
is a wooden path here that leads to the lighthouse. There are also plenty of
deer in the area, so be careful driving at night.

Coffee and Restaurant “The Dorian Nemuro”
7. Dine at Coffee and Restaurant “The
Dorian Nemuro,” or simply The Dorian (どりあん) as locals call it. With its Western-style façade, the restaurant
gives off an American vibe. This cozy spot is best known for its signature
escalope dish served with flavorful butter rice.
8. Visit and explore Meiji Park (明治公園). This
vast park was named one of the “100 Best Historical Parks of Japan.” You can
see the Silo Plaza here, which is the highlight of the park. Inside the park is
also the Nemuro City Pokémon manhole cover, so don’t miss that out, too.

Nemuro City Northern Territory Museum
9. Visit the Nemuro City Northern Territory
Museum (根室市北方領土資料館). It is one of the best places to learn about the history of the
city and the northern territories. You can also get a certificate here that you
visited Japan’s easternmost point.
10. Visit Cape Nosappu (納沙布岬). This is Japan’s easternmost point. Don’t forget to take a photo at the Bridge of the Four Islands Monument, which has become the symbol of Cape Nosappu. Aside from this, you can also see the easternmost post and easternmost lighthouse of Japan here.
I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Nemuro City gave you an idea and inspiration to visit the easternmost city of Hokkaido.
