Kushiro (釧路市) is a picturesque port city in Hokkaido’s Kushiro Subprefecture, Japan. It is best known for the Kushiro Marsh, the largest wetland in the country. The origin of the city's name remains uncertain, though several theories suggest it may come from the Ainu words kus-ru, meaning “crossing the road,” or kus-sir, which translates to “mountains across the river.”

1. Take a photo of Kushiro City's manhole cover designs. So far, I have seen 4 unique manhole cover designs, which are commonly found in the city proper and also in the Lake Akan area of the city.

2. Capture a photo of Kushiro City's Pokémon manhole cover, located in the grounds of Roadside Station Akan Tancho no Sato. The design showcases Alolan Vulpix and Decidueye.

3. Visit Tottori Shrine (鳥取神社), one of the town's main shrines, located in the heart of the city. It is a place where you could pay respects and offer prayers to the guardian of the city. You can get a goshuin here for your collection.

5. Admire the captivating exhibits at Kushiro Shitsugen Art Museum (釧路湿原美術館). Admission is 1,000 yen, but for art enthusiasts, the diverse collection of paintings and rotating exhibitions makes it well worth the visit.

6. Check out the exhibits at Tottori Centennial Hall (鳥取百年館). This place looks like a Japanese castle. Inside, you can learn about the early settlers in Kushiro from Tottori Prefecture.

7. Visit Nusamai Bridge (幣舞橋) at night and take in its enchanting beauty under the soft glow of nighttime illumination. This elegant, European-style low bridge is adorned with four graceful female statues, each symbolizing one of the four seasons. The bridge is best viewed during sunset or at night from the Friendship Square (ふれあい広場) and the Nusamai Square (ぬさまい広場).
