Nemuro Izumo Shrine is the easternmost Izumo shrine in Japan. Established in 1897, this historic
Shinto shrine is a significant cultural and spiritual landmark in the remote
eastern tip of the country. Despite its classification as a non-ranking shrine,
it holds over a century of religious and community importance for locals and
visitors alike.

History and Traditional Architecture of Nemuro Izumo
Shrine
The main shrine building was constructed in 1903, followed
by the installation of the iconic torii gate in 1930. Over the decades, Nemuro
Izumo Shrine has undergone multiple enhancements, including gaining religious
corporation status in 1953. In 1976, a stone fence and temizuya (purification
basin) were added to the grounds.

The shrine name monument was established in
1986, and a major renovation in 1993 restored the offering hall and main
building in the Shinmei-zukuri architectural style, a traditional design
typical of Hokkaido shrines.
Spiritual Importance: Worshiping Ōkuninushi no Kami
Nemuro Izumo Shrine enshrines Ōkuninushi no Kami, a revered
deity associated with nation-building, matchmaking, and medicine. Serving
approximately 200 local households, the shrine remains a central place of
worship and spiritual connection for the Nemuro community.

My family and I visited Nemuro
Izumo Shrine for the first time on September 18, 2023,
during the third day of our “3-Day Respect of the Aged Road Trip,” which
happens to be my 686th day here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. As
part of our Hokkaido 179 journey—a goal to visit all 179 municipalities in the
prefecture—we made it a priority to visit at least one of the main shrines in
each municipality to pay our respects and offer prayers.

It’s FREE to park, enter, and
explore the Nemuro Izumo Shrine grounds. However, please bring cash if you plan to
avail of the shrine’s goshuin or omamori.

24/7. However, the shrine office is open from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Getting to Nemuro Izumo Shrine
Nemuro Izumo Shrine is about 850 meters away from Nemuro Station. You can easily reach it on foot.
If you want to take the bus, head out of the station and go to the Ekimae Terminal bus stop and board the Junkan Line - Koujuu iriguchi「Hanazonochou」bus operated by Nemuro Kotsu Bus Company.
