10 More Things to Do in Shari

Shari (斜里町) is a picturesque town located in Hokkaido's Okhotsk Subprefecture, Japan. The town is vast and beautiful, offering a multitude of activities to enjoy. That’s why I’m back with another article about 10 More Things to Do in Shari.

しれとこ里味
Shiretoko Satomi

1. Dine at Shiretoko Satomi (しれとこ里味) and savor the delicious whelk kakiage bowl. For the perfect combination, pair it with the restaurant’s renowned soba.

国設知床野営場
Shiretoko National Campsite

2. Set up a tent and enjoy an overnight stay at Shiretoko National Campsite (国設知床野営場), a scenic campground nestled in the heart of nature. Surrounded by lush forests and with views of the Sea of Okhotsk, it offers a peaceful retreat where you can relax under the stars, listen to the sounds of wildlife, and truly immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Shiretoko Peninsula.

知床第一ホテル
Shiretoko Daiichi Hotel

3. Take a relaxing dip in the soothing hot springs of Shiretoko Daiichi Hotel (知床第一ホテル), where you can unwind while enjoying scenic views of the surrounding nature. For a more leisurely experience, consider booking a room and staying overnight. This allows you to fully enjoy the onsen at your own pace—whether it’s a rejuvenating soak after a day of exploring or a peaceful early morning bath before sunrise. Staying overnight also gives you access to the hotel’s other amenities, including local cuisine and comfortable accommodations.

弁財岩
Benzei Rock

4. Take a photo of the unique and eye-catching Benzei Rock (弁財岩), a striking rock formation that stands out along the Shiretoko coastline. Shaped by centuries of natural erosion, its dramatic and rugged appearance has made it a popular photo spot for visitors. The rock is especially captivating at sunrise or sunset, when the light casts beautiful shadows and highlights its texture. It’s not just a geological wonder—it’s also steeped in local lore, making it a must-see for those exploring the natural and cultural treasures of Shiretoko.

斜里朱円周堤墓群
Shari Shuen Shutei Ancient Tombs

5. Visit the Shari Shuen Shutei Ancient Tombs (斜里朱円周堤墓群) to see rare Jōmon-period ring-shaped burial mounds unique to eastern Hokkaido. Dating back over 3,000 years, these large earthworks once held communal graves and have yielded artifacts like pottery, jade beads, and lacquerware—evidence of ancient trade. The site offers scenic views and is free to explore, located just a short drive or bus ride from JR Shiretoko Shari Station. For more context and a closer look at the excavated items, visit the nearby Shiretoko Museum.

北のアルプ美術館
Kitano Alpes Museum

6.  Visit the Kitano Alpes Museum (北のアルプ美術館), a charming cultural spot where art and literature come together in a serene setting. Located in the quiet landscape of Shari Town, this small but thoughtfully curated museum features a collection of paintings, sculptures, and literary works, many of which reflect the natural beauty and rich culture of eastern Hokkaido.

以久科原生花園
Ikushina Genseikaen Primeval Flower Garden

7.  Visit the Ikushina Genseikaen Primeval Flower Garden (以久科原生花園), a coastal gem where wildflowers and natural landscapes blend beautifully with the sea. The best time to visit is from June to August, when vibrant beach roses (rugosa roses) are in full bloom, filling the air with a sweet fragrance and painting the area in shades of pink and green. The garden, which stretches along the Sea of Okhotsk, also offers stunning views of the shoreline and nearby mountains.

オロンコ岩
Oronko Rock

8. Climb Oronko Rock (オロンコ岩), one of the best spots in Shari to catch a breathtaking sunset. A set of manmade steps leads to the summit, making the ascent accessible for most visitors. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Sea of Okhotsk, the surrounding cliffs, and the charming town of Utoro below—an unforgettable sight, especially as the sky glows with warm evening colors.

Shiretoko Sightseeing Cruise to Cape Shiretoko
Shiretoko Sightseeing Cruise to Cape Shiretoko

9. Join the Shiretoko Sightseeing Cruise from Utoro Fishing Port (ウトロ漁港) and experience the stunning coastline of the Shiretoko Peninsula from the sea. This scenic cruise takes you all the way to Cape Shiretoko (知床岬), offering breathtaking views of rugged cliffs, waterfalls, and untouched nature, many of which are only accessible by boat. It’s a unique and memorable way to explore one of Hokkaido’s most beautiful and remote landscapes.

Shiretoko National Park (知床国立公園)
Shiretoko National Park

10. Hike deep into the Shiretoko National Park (知床国立公園). You can also hike Mt. Io (硫黄山) and Mt. Shiretoko (知床岳). However, make sure that you have studied the hiking trails well before going. Aside from that, you should bring a bear bell and bear spray with you as the national park is home to the Ezo Brown Bear.

I hope my list of the 10 More Things to Do in Shari gave you an idea and inspiration to visit this picturesque town in the Okhotsk Subprefecture of Hokkaido.
