Rumoi Shrine Revisited Winter 2022

The first time that I visited Rumoi Shrine (留萌神社was last November 14, 2021, which was my 2nd weekend here in Japan. During that visit, the leaves of the trees were already yellow and were falling one by one in preparation for the upcoming winter.

Rumoi Shrine Revisited

(Winter)

Back then, I promised myself to revisit Rumoi Shrine and the other scenic spots of Rumoi City whenever the seasons change. Since it was autumn during my first visit, then naturally my next visit is in winter.

Rumoi Shrine - Rumoi City, Hokkaido Prefecture

Although the first snow fell last November, I waited for some more months before checking out Rumoi City's famous landmarks. In that way, there would definitely be a very noticeable, if not dramatic change in the scenery.

The stairs up Rumoi Shrine are covered with almost 6-feet of snow

I revisited Rumoi Shrine last February 6, 2022, which was my 97th day here in Japan as an ALT for the JET Programme. During my visit, the grounds of Rumoi Shrine were covered with knee-deep snow. This made the shrine look magical because of how its red roof and wooden facade contrasted with the whiteness of the snow.

Getting to Rumoi Shrine

Sadly, there are no buses that go directly to Rumoi Shrine. You can ride a taxi but it's pricey. Your best option is to walk from Rumoi JR Station to Rumoi Shrine which is approximately 15-20 minutes away.
