A Vibrant Spectacle of Nature and Creativity

From mid-July to mid-August, the rice fields come alive with six vivid colors—green, yellow, purple, red, orange, and white—created by the natural hues of different rice varieties. These hues form intricate designs, transforming the fields into giant canvases showcasing awe-inspiring images.

2023: A Collaboration with Matsuko Deluxe

This year’s rice field art design is a special collaboration with Matsuko Deluxe, the image character for Hokkaido rice since 2014. The artwork also features Asahikawa City's mascot, Asappi, and Takasu Town's adorable Attakasu-kun. The collaboration is part of a broader effort to boost tourism and promote Hokkaido rice, which is regaining attention as travel recovers from the pandemic.

Team Nicerio revisits Tanbo Art Asahikawa 2023

Our family first discovered the JA Taisetsu Rice Field Art on September 17, 2022, coinciding with Asahikawa City's 100th Anniversary. The experience was so captivating that it quickly became a yearly tradition. This year, during our Sibling Road Trip #3 on July 27, 2023, I visited with my daughter and siblings. It was my 633rd day in Japan as a JET Programme ALT, and seeing the rice field art again reminded me of the beauty and creativity that Hokkaido offers.

The 2023 collaboration with Matsuko Deluxe and the local mascots made this visit unforgettable. The vivid colors, the creative design, and the lively atmosphere left us in awe.

The Tanbo Art season runs from July to early September. You can visit any time of the day, but it is highly recommended that you visit in the morning, as the paddy fields do not have lights for night viewing. You can use the observation deck from mid-July until early September.
