A Brief History of the Sapporo TV Tower
Initially, a transmission hub, the tower’s broadcasting role diminished after a transmission facility was established on Mount Teine. However, the Sapporo TV Tower found a new purpose as a repeater for AIR-G and FM North Wave radio stations. Its legacy expanded in 1961 with the installation of digital clocks, positioned 65 meters above ground. These clocks, donated by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (now Panasonic), were the brainchild of founder Konosuke Matsushita, who envisioned them as a feature to draw attention to the tower.

The clocks underwent two significant repairs in 1998 and 2006. During the latter renovation, LED technology replaced the old display, enhancing visibility and energy efficiency. That same year, the tower’s exterior saw updates, with the wall colors transitioning from pale green to dark green, symbolizing a modernized look.

Team Nicerio visits Sapporo TV Tower
On July 28, 2023, during our Sibling Road Trip 4, my daughter, siblings, and I had the opportunity to visit the iconic Sapporo TV Tower. This visit was particularly special as it marked my 634th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme and became a highlight of our time in Sapporo City.
Although I’ve seen the Sapporo TV Tower countless times during my trips to the city, this was my first time venturing up to its observation deck. Inside, we discovered a variety of souvenir shops offering unique keepsakes.
