Shirogane Shrine Details
Shirogane Shrine stands as a quiet testament to the resilience and history of this picturesque region. Unscathed by the devastating mudflows caused by the great eruption of Mount Tokachi in 1926, this sacred site holds a special place in the heart of the community.

Historical Significance of Shirogane Shrine
In July 1951, Sato Masazo, a representative of the local Tourist Association, and other visionaries established the O-ma of Sapporo Shrine at this location, praying for the peace and prosperity of Biei Shirogane Onsen. Later, the O-ma of Ise Jingu Shrine was also enshrined, marking a significant cultural milestone. By August 8, 1953, the present-day Shirogane Shrine was officially built, forever intertwining its legacy with the region's rich heritage.

Guardian of Biei Shirogane Onsen
Situated at the base of the active Tokachi-dake volcano, which continues to emit smoke, Shirogane Shrine is a tranquil guardian of the town below. Visitors can experience its deep historical roots and the spiritual atmosphere it offers. While the shrine does not provide goshuin (stamp books for shrine visits), it remains a worthwhile destination for those exploring Biei's natural and cultural treasures.

The annual grand festival, held on August 8 to commemorate the onsen’s opening anniversary, is a highlight for locals and travelers alike. If you're visiting during spring or summer, be prepared for the abundance of insects that accompany the season, adding a touch of rustic charm to your visit.

Team Nicerio visits Shirogane Shrine
On July 23, 2023, during our Siblings Road Trip #2, my daughter, siblings, and I visited Shirogane Shrine for the first time. This was during my 629th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. The shrine wasn’t in our original itinerary, but while exploring the area, we were intrigued by the torii gate by the hillside, so we decided to investigate it, which eventually led us to the shrine. Like our usual shrine visits, we offered prayers and made a wish before leaving.
