A Visionary Behind the Legacy

Taizo Honma, born in 1849 on Sado Island, began his career as a humble kimono-maker in Otaru. By the age of 23, his ambition and eye for opportunity led him to Mashike, where he foresaw immense potential for economic development. Over the years, Taizo diversified his enterprises, delving into marine transportation, sake brewing, herring fishing, and more, cementing his reputation as a trailblazer of his time.

Despite his successes, Taizo lacked a dedicated home or shop during his early years in Mashike. In 1881, he embarked on the construction of what is now the Former Merchant Maruichi Honma Residence. This project, spanning nearly 20 years, resulted in a unique structure designed to prioritize commerce while accommodating residential needs—a reflection of Taizo’s business-oriented life.

Architectural and Historical Significance

At its zenith, the residence featured 23 rooms, including four storehouses, shops, and an office building, all interconnected by intricate passageways. This innovative design highlighted the fusion of practicality and elegance, making it a standout structure in its era. Over time, economic changes led to the closure of many associated businesses, and the residence remained in the Honma family until 1998.

In 2000, the residence underwent an extensive restoration and was opened to the public. By 2003, it earned recognition as a National Important Cultural Property, securing its place as a significant historical and cultural landmark.

My family and I had the privilege of visiting the Former Merchant Maruichi Honma Residence on July 29, 2023. It marked my 635th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme and became a cherished memory during my sibling’s tour of Mashike. Exploring the meticulously preserved building, marveling at the artifacts, and enjoying the cosplay experience was a journey back in time we won’t soon forget.
