Early Beginnings and Expansion
In August 1891, a modest 23-square-meter shrine was
constructed to honor Okunitama Okami at the behest of Sapporo Shrine. Shortly
after, on September 25, 1891, it was officially named Eniwa Shrine. By 1901,
the shrine gained recognition as an unranked shrine, and on July 19, 1901,
it merged with Toyoei Shrine, adopting its current name, Toyosaka Shrine.
Toyosaka Shrine's Main Hall
The construction of the first major shrine building was
completed on August 27, 1934, reflecting the community’s dedication.
Over time, the shrine transitioned from a village shrine in 1936 to a
town shrine in 1935, solidifying its role in the community.
Architectural and Organizational Milestones
A new chapter began in September 1981 with the
construction of the current Shinmei-zukuri-style shrine building, renowned for
its elegant yet traditional architectural design. By December 1985, the
shrine office and auxiliary buildings were also modernized, enhancing their
functionality.

The shrine’s community involvement grew stronger with the
formation of the God-pious Women's Association in 1987 and the Keisaikai,
a youth group responsible for carrying the sacred mikoshi, in 1988.
These organizations continue to foster a deep connection between the shrine and
the local community.

Team Nicerio visits Toyosaka Shrine
On July 22, 2023, my siblings and I visited Toyosaka
Shrine as part of our Sibling Road Trip #1. This day was particularly memorable
for me as it marked my 628th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme.
Including Toyosaka Shrine in our itinerary was intentional, as we make it a
point to pay respects to the main shrine of every municipality we visit for the
first time. This visit was also a step toward achieving our goal of exploring
all 179 municipalities in Hokkaido.
What stood out to me about Toyosaka Shrine was its serene
atmosphere. Despite being located in the heart of the city, the shrine is
surrounded by towering trees that provide a peaceful escape from the bustling
urban environment. It’s a truly relaxing spot, perfect for anyone looking to
unwind and connect with nature amidst the cityscape.
Toyosaka Shrine’s Admission Fees
It’s FREE to enter and explore Toyosaka Shrine’s grounds, but if you plan to avail of the shrine’s goshuin and omamori, make sure that you bring cash as credit cards aren’t accepted here.
Toyosaka Shrine Operating Hours
Tokosaka Shrine grounds are open 24/7, but the shrine office is open only from 9 AM to 5 PM.
Why visit Toyosaka Shrine?
Toyosaka Shrine is more than just a place of worship—it’s a
historical and cultural landmark. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an
architecture aficionado, or simply seeking tranquility, the shrine offers a
profound glimpse into the spiritual and cultural legacy of Hokkaido.
