The Unique Beauty of Shirahige Falls

The waterfall gets its name from the delicate streams of water that pour through the cracks of the valley cliffs, resembling a white beard. With a dramatic 30-meter drop and an elevation of 600 meters, Shirahige Falls is among Japan’s rare submerged waterfalls. Its stunning bluish hue is due to the natural mineral content of the Biei River, offering an unforgettable sight for nature enthusiasts.

On July 23, 2023, during our Siblings Road Trip #2, my daughter, siblings, and I visited Shirahige Falls for the first time. This memorable stop coincided with my 629th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. It is probably one of the highlights of our road trip for the day. It was also our last destination for the day.
