Visit Shikabe Geyser Park: A Natural Wonder with Therapeutic Foot Baths

The highlight of any visit to Shikabe Roadside Station is the Shikabe Geyser Park, home to a spectacular geyser that has been continuously erupting for nearly 100 years. Discovered in 1924 during hot spring test drilling, this natural wonder continues to surprise visitors with its powerful eruptions. The geyser reaches heights of over 15 meters and expels water at a temperature of approximately 100°C, making it a rare and breathtaking sight to behold.

What makes the Shikabe Geyser experience even more special is the foot bath located nearby. As you watch the geyser in action, you can also relax in the soothing hot spring foot bath, which is known for its therapeutic benefits. The water, sourced directly from the geyser’s hot springs, helps alleviate conditions such as neuralgia, poor circulation, and general fatigue. It’s the perfect way to unwind and refresh after a day of sightseeing.

On April 3, 2023, my family and I made our final stop at Shikabe Roadside Station during the last day of our 3-day "Birthday Road Trip." This also marked my 518th day in Japan as an ALT with the JET Programme. As part of our goal to visit all the roadside stations in Hokkaido for our Hokkaido 179 challenge, we made sure to collect stamps from each one. At Shikabe, we treated ourselves to delicious sesame soft cream and got to witness the town’s famous geyser in action—a true highlight of our visit to this charming town.
