Shikabe (函館市) is a tranquil seaside town located in the Oshima Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan, in the northeastern part of the Oshima Peninsula, near Mt. Komagatake. The town is occasionally affected by ashfall from volcanic eruptions and is situated along National Route 278, which runs along the coast. The name "Shikabe" comes from the Ainu word "Shikerupe," meaning "a place with yellowfin tuna." Historically, the town was known as "Takamachi" (falcon waiting) due to the large number of wild hawks in the area, which were even presented as tributes to the shogunate.

Shikabe Inari Shrine (鹿部稲荷神社), the
town's main shrine. Don't forget to bring your goshuincho, as the shrine offers

3. Check out the "Hokutosen" Poem
by Toba Ichiro (鳥羽一郎「北斗船」歌碑) along
Route 43, just across from the roadside station. This monument serves as a
notable landmark in the town of Shikabe.

4. Enjoy a meal at Yutori (お食事処 ゆとり), a syokudo and teishoku restaurant
famous for its katsu curry and unique cutlet curry ramen.

popular for its kaisendon which is a must-try making it a must-visit spot for seafood lovers.
6. Capture a photo of Shamisen Falls (三味線滝), named for the sound of the cascading
water, which is said to resemble the music of a shamisen. While it's a
beautiful waterfall, note that it is located along the roadside and lacks
dedicated parking.
7. Visit Shikabe Hyotan Swamp Park (鹿部 ひょうたん沼公園), a gourd-shaped swamp perfect for
unwinding and enjoying nature with a stunning view of Mt. Komagatake.
8. Visit the Shikabe Geyser (しかべ間歇泉), located behind the Shikabe Roadside
Station. Be prepared to wait a bit for the geyser to erupt, so bring plenty of patience. Heads up, there is an entrance fee of 300 yen per adult and 200 yen per child.
9. Take a leisurely stroll through the expansive Shikabe Park (鹿部公園). The best time to visit is in spring, from late April to early May, when the sakura trees bloom. It's also a great place to stroll around or just relax during the hot summer months.
