A Serene Oasis with Scenic Vibes
Shukei Pond is more than just a pond—it’s a thoughtfully
designed landscape garden featuring stone-paved walkways, rustic benches, and a
charming Suisha Koya or waterwheel hut (though it appears
decorative and may not be operational). A wooden pathway arches across the water, leading to a small island in the
center—inviting visitors to venture out and fully engage with nature’s calm.

Nature's Touch—Flora, Fauna, and Fountains
Surrounded by vibrant green foliage, Shukei Pond creates an
ideal spot for light forest therapy (“森林浴”).
In spring, the scene is especially idyllic with cherry blossoms in
bloom. It's perfect for a picnic or a restful pause. If you look closely at the gentle ripples of the water, you might be delighted by the
sight of koi gliding gracefully or quicksilver water striders dancing on the
surface.

Spiritual Serenity at the Shrine's Edge
Just a short walk away, you’ll find Rishirizan Shrine, a peaceful retreat where many visitors stop to seek blessings for a safe climb or a smooth journey. The path leading from the garden guides you through the shrine’s torii gate and into its main hall, offering a beautiful harmony of nature and tradition that makes the visit feel both calming and inspiring.
The Backpack Adventures Visits Shukei Pond

| We first visited at night, and the pond looked as if it were drained. However, it was filled with water when we revisited the next day after our hike. |
I visited Shukei Pond with the Tomamae Gang on the first day of our two-day Rishirifuji hike. This marked my 718th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. We stopped by Shukei Pond after paying our respects at Rishirizan Shrine, the day before our mountain climb. It was already dark when we first arrived, so we couldn’t fully appreciate the pond’s beauty. Thankfully, we returned the next day after our hike, and that’s when we were finally able to admire the pond in all its serene splendor.
