The Meaning Behind “Yuni”

The campsite is located in the Sakaemachi Campsite Ruins, a historic site where stone tools were discovered—the first evidence of human presence on Rishiri Island. In honor of this heritage, the name “Yuni” was chosen from the Ainu language, meaning “a place with hot springs”. This reflects both the cultural history of the island and the nearby natural hot springs.

Adding to the charm, the four cottages are named after trees that symbolize Rishiri: rowan, Ezo spruce, red glehnii, and Ezo mountain cherry. Even the six bungalows are numbered in the Ainu language, making your stay not only relaxing but also culturally enriching.

The Backpack Adventures stayed at Rishiri Island Campsite Yuni

I stayed at Rishiri Island Campsite “Yuni” overnight last October 20, 2023, during my Mt. Rishiri hike with the Tomamae Gang, Matsushita-sensei, and Jon. This was my 718th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme, which made the experience even more memorable. The day before our climb, we visited a nearby shrine, adding a meaningful cultural stop to our adventure.

Instead of pitching a tent, we decided to rent a bungalow, and it turned out to be a great choice. It was warm, cozy, and perfect for resting before the hike. The campsite itself is very convenient, just a short walk from both the onsen and the trailhead. What I particularly liked is how well-lit the area is and how close it is to town, making it an accessible and comfortable place to stay on Rishiri Island.
