Monday – Obon Day 1 x Rumoi
What a wonderful Monday morning it has been! The air was so fresh, and the sun's gentle light painted everything with a warm and welcoming glow. Today marked the start of my 3-day Obon break, a much-needed pause from the usual busy routine.

| Enjoying the sun with an early morning stroll near Midorigaoka Elementary School |
We decided not to go on any road trips today because we knew that many locals would be heading back to their hometowns, possibly causing traffic and crowded tourist spots. Instead, we aimed for a calm and peaceful day
The morning began with a special activity. Kai and I joined Ella as she watered the plants at Midorigaoka Elementary School. It was a meaningful task for her, and it filled my heart with happiness to see her taking responsibility so seriously. The school's focus on instilling a sense of duty in the kids touched me deeply.

| Believe it or not, this is my lunch for today. It's called Hiyashi Chuka, but we refer to it as the Japanese summer noodles |

After Ella finished her task, we returned home, enjoying the closeness we shared. The day unfolded with moments of bonding – we laughed, shared stories, and strengthened our connections. I also managed to watch a few episodes of "The Last Kingdom," a captivating series that swept me away to a world of adventure and mystery.
Day 652: August 15, 2023
Tuesday – Obon Day 2 x Rumoi
Another humid day here in Rumoi City. Just like yesterday, our morning was all about bonding and attending to our individual tasks. I managed to write a bunch of articles for my blog while catching up on a few episodes of "The Last Kingdom".![]() |
| Rumoi City Library |
Later in the afternoon, we took a drive to the Rumoi City Library. It was a peaceful place to spend some quiet time, and it was the perfect opportunity for Ella to practice her Japanese reading skills while getting lost in the world of books.

| Sweet Potato KitKat |
After our library visit, we swung by COOP to pick up some groceries. Guess what? There was a new flavor of KitKat on sale - Sweet Potato KitKat. It's a flavor they had last year, but it's back with fresh new packaging. Ella and I were pretty excited to give it a try.

| Dinner: KC's Special Spaghetti |
As the day winds down, I can't help but appreciate these simple moments that weave our days together. Tomorrow's a new day with new adventures waiting.
Day 653: August 16, 2023
Wednesday – Obon Day 3 x Rumoi
Today, the sky is filled with clouds, and the humidity lingers. It's the final day of Obon and a quiet one at that.

| Kimchi making with Ella and Mommy |
Staying true to the pattern of the past few days, we stayed home. I had a wonderful time looking after Kai, while my wife and daughter got busy making kimchi from the cucumbers we got at Utashinai Roadside Station a little while ago.

| Movie time: Heart of Stone |
The day may have been simple, but it was filled with warmth and togetherness, a perfect way to close the chapter on this year's Obon.
Day 654: August 17, 2023
Thursday – Embetsu
It rained a lot last night making the morning the coolest this month. It was a pity as it made me want to sleep longer. However, my Obon break is already over and I need to go back to work.![]() |

| Some of the waves were 6 feet high |
Today was actually a stormy day. It was a scary experience going home as the winds and the waves were strong. There were times when the bus seemed to veer off the path. Thankfully, the driver was able to control it.
Day 655: August 18, 2023
Friday – Rumoi
Typhoon Lan brought relentless rain that lasted throughout the night. It was a bit worrying, to be honest. But the good news is that by around 6 AM, the typhoon started to calm down. The rain finally subsided, and I could breathe a sigh of relief.![]() |
| Rumoi High School 8.18.2023 |
Here’s my workload today:
4th period – Quizziz Refreshment Activity @ 1- 1 of Matsuda-sensei
Overall, the 3-day Obon break allowed me to take enough rest and also bond with my family. Sadly, we weren’t able to travel to any new destinations. Regardless, time with family is time well spent. As for my work, I visited Rumoi High School and Embetsu Agricultural High School this week. Both were successful and productive.
