Discovering the World of Japanese KitKat Flavors

When I first arrived in Hokkaido, Japan in 2021, I never expected that one of my most exciting hobbies would be collecting unique KitKat flavors. What started as a casual curiosity quickly turned into a passionate hunt for the rarest, most seasonal, and sometimes the most unusual KitKat flavors in Japan.

Since then, I’ve gathered almost 100 different flavors, each with its own story, packaging, and sometimes even a connection to a local region or tradition. From matcha green tea to purple sweet potato, sake-infused KitKats, and even cheesecake, Japan’s KitKat world is one sweet adventure you’ll want to follow.

Why Japan Has the Most Unique KitKat Flavors

Japan is known worldwide for its creativity, and that includes its snacks. Nestlé Japan has turned the iconic chocolate bar into a canvas for local flavors, seasonal ingredients, and limited-edition releases. Whether it’s to celebrate cherry blossom season, Hokkaido’s dairy culture, or a regional specialty, there’s almost always a new KitKat flavor out every month.

However, I’ve also noticed that some flavors are recycled depending on the season or simply re-released with new packaging. While it can be a bit tricky for collectors, it also makes the hunt even more exciting.

The Joy of Collecting KitKat in Japan

Collecting Japanese KitKats isn’t just about eating chocolate—it’s about culture, design, and timing. Each bar feels like a small souvenir, a piece of Japanese creativity you can hold (and taste). Some are only available in airports or souvenir shops. Others are hidden in local convenience stores, seasonal markets, or even KitKat Chocolatory boutiques.

Regardless of how common or rare the flavor may be, there’s something genuinely fun about building this collection. Every new find is a small victory. I will continue to collect new KitKat flavors and update this article with every new flavor that I get.

Hiking Mt. Gulugod Baboy

Our adventure today takes us to a mountain south of Metro Manila. Mt. Gulugod Baboy  (other variations Mt. Gulugod-Baboy ) is located in Anilao, Mabini in the province of Batangas. Gulugod-baboy is a Filipino phrase that means "pig's spine." The mountain got its name from the contours of the peaks which resemble a pig's back as seen from Janao Bay. Mt. Gulugod Baboy Mt. Kamay ni Hesus Shrine,  or simply Kamay ni Hesus   is a famous religious shrine and grotto. It is l ocated in Barangay Tinamnan, Lucban in the province of Quezon. Akashi Kaikyo Bridge - Hyogo

Connecting the island of Awaji and Kobe City which are both in Hyogo Prefecture, Akashi Kaikyo Bridge  ( 明石海峡大橋 )  is the longest bridge in Japan to date.  Akashi Kaikyo Bridge History Prior to the construction of the  Akashi Kaikyo Bridge , ferries carried passengers across the Akashi Strait. However, the strait is known to be a dangerous waterway that already took countless lives. The most famous of which was in 1955 when two ferries sank in the strait during a storm. This tragedy claimed 168 lives and was said to be what convinced the Japanese government to develop plans to construct a bridge. Tenryuji - Kyoto

Located in 68 Susukinobaba-cho, Saga-Tenryuji, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City in Kyoto Prefecture, Tenryuji ( 天龍寺 )  is one of the 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Kyoto City. Tenryuji  ( 天龍寺 ) Tenryuji History Tenryuji was built under the instructions of shogun Ashikaga Takauji in 1339 in memory of Emperor Go-Daigo who had passed away that year.
