Shintoku (新得町) is a scenic mountainous town located inland within the Tokachi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. Its name is derived from the Ainu word "Shittoku-nai," which translates to "shoulder" or "edge of a mountain." Additionally, the area is believed to have been a site where the Ainu people crafted "shintoko," lacquerware traditionally used for brewing sake.

For those planning to visit this scenic mountainous town to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Shintoku:

Shintoku manhole covers

1. Take a picture of the manhole covers of Shintoku. So far, I have seen 3 unique manhole covers, which are commonly found around the town. There are a few colored designs. These are installed along Hon Dori Street near Shintoku Station.

3. Visit Shintoku Shrine (新得神社), the town's central shrine, situated on its northeastern outskirts. You can get a goshuin here for your collection.

新得駅
Shintoku Station

4. Stop by Shintoku Station (新得駅), the town’s primary gateway for commuters. It’s also one of Shintoku’s key landmarks, known for its striking façade. Inside the station, you’ll find a restaurant that serves soba. Just outside, you can spot the Shintoku Pokémon Manhole Cover.

蕎麦 十箱
Soba ju Hako

5. Give the soba at Soba ju Hako (蕎麦 十箱) a try—its name intriguingly means “10 Boxes of Soba.” The restaurant is famous for its Shintoku Soba, which is a bit thicker and has less water content compared to typical soba noodles.

新得町SL広場
Shintoku Town SL Square

6. Visit and stroll around the Shintoku Town SL Square (新得町SL広場). You will be able to see the preserved D5195 steam engine here. There is also a walking path in the forested part of the park. If you time your visit, you would be able to see a train passing through the Sekisho Line.

新得町営浴場 駅前温泉
Shintoku Town Ekimae Spa

7. Unwind with a soothing soak at the onsen of Shintoku Town Ekimae Spa (新得町営浴場 駅前温泉). It’s very affordable and is a few blocks away from Shintoku Station.

新得山第二展望台
Shintokuyama Second Observatory Deck

8. Climb up to the Shintokuyama Second Observatory Deck (新得山第二展望台) for an even more stunning view than the first deck. You can reach it by hiking along the road beside Shintoku Shrine.

クラブメッド北海道サホロ

9. Stay for a day or two at Club Med Sahoro (クラブメッド北海道サホロ) and enjoy an unforgettable stay. In winter, it transforms into a skier’s paradise, offering an exceptional family experience with full-day activities for kids and high-quality ski lessons for adults.

狩勝高原園地
Karikachi Plateau Park

10. Explore Karikachi Plateau Park (狩勝高原園地), where visitors can enjoy a trolley ride around the grounds. The park also features the preserved SL 59672 locomotive as a highlight. In spring, the blooming plum trees are a sight you won’t want to miss.

I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Shintoku gave you an idea and inspiration to visit this mountainous town in the Tokachi Subprefecture of Hokkaido.
