Step Back in Time with Historical Exhibits

One of the standout features of Nakatombetsu Kotobuki Park is its impressive display of historical artifacts. The park is home to the preserved 9600-type steam locomotive "49648," the last steam locomotive used in service by the Japanese National Railways, excluding those preserved for tourism. While most steam locomotives were retired by December 1975, this remarkable engine was operational until March 1976, offering visitors a unique glimpse into Japan's transportation history. The locomotive’s driver's cab is open to the public, providing a rare hands-on experience.

My daughter and I visited Nakatombetsu Kotobuki Park on the final day of our Father and Daughter Road Trip #5, marking my 623rd day in Japan as an ALT with the JET Programme. It was the first stop on our itinerary for the day. Although it was drizzling during our visit, we decided to proceed, largely because I was eager to see the preserved F-104J fighter jet. Had the weather been clearer, we had planned to play park golf together. Despite the rain, we managed to explore much of the park and still had a wonderful time enjoying its attractions.
