Stay Inside a Train Car

When the Nayoro Main Line ceased operations, the train cars from Okoppe were ingeniously transformed into free accommodations. Now, these two train cars serve as a haven for travelers seeking an unconventional stay.

One car is designed with chair seats, making it a cozy space for eating, relaxing, or taking a break. The second car features tatami mats, providing a traditional Japanese-style sleeping area with a capacity for up to 10 guests. Guests are encouraged to bring their own sleeping bags for a camping-like experience.

Facilities and Amenities

Although the Rugosa Express is simple and rustic, it offers essential amenities to ensure a comfortable stay:

  • Washroom and Japanese-style toilet
  • Washing machine (exclusive to Rugosa Express guests)
  • Electrical outlets

Do note that there is no heating or cooling equipment available, so the facility operates only from May to October. A fan is provided for warmer months, but it remains closed during the winter season.

Perfect for Adventurers

The Rugosa Express is a popular choice for motorcyclists, cyclists, hitchhikers, and budget travelers. Its first-come, first-served policy adds to its adventurous charm. Conveniently located nearby are a public bath and the Okoppe Mart, perfect for stocking up on essentials or relaxing after a long day of travel.

Team Nicerio visits Rugosa Express

On July 16, 2023, my daughter and I visited Rugosa Express for the first time during the second day of our Father and Daughter Road Trip #5. This special stop coincided with my 622nd day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. To be honest, we just accidentally stumbled upon the Rugosa Express during our visit to Okoppe Roadside Station. Had I known that it existed, I would have made sure that we would stay the night in it. The interior of the train was surprisingly clean. Given the chance, I would surely want to experience sleeping in the Rugosa Express in the future.

Surprisingly, this facility is FREE of charge. However, it’s on a first-come, first-served basis.
