A Local Favorite with a Heartfelt Tradition
Saruru Beach may not be widely known among tourists, but it holds a special place in the hearts of the local community. Before the beach officially opens each year, local elementary and junior high school students and community groups come together for a massive beach cleanup. In addition to driftwood and seaweed washed ashore, volunteers collect an impressive 80 bags (45 liters each) of trash annually, ensuring a clean and safe environment for all visitors.

Camping at Saruru Beach
During the summer, camping is allowed directly on the beach. While the experience is truly memorable, space is limited, so it's available on a first-come, first-served basis. Team Nicerio visits Saruru Beach
On July 16, 2023, my daughter and I visited Saruru Beach for the first time during the second day of our Father and Daughter Road Trip #5. It also marked my 622nd day in Japan as an ALT through the JET Programme. We originally planned to camp by the beach, but unfortunately, heavy rain greeted us that day, and according to the forecast, it wasn’t letting up anytime soon. So, we decided to set aside our camping plans and simply visit the beach to take in the view. Despite the weather, it was still a lovely spot to explore. Hopefully, in the future, we’ll return under clearer skies and finally get to camp by the shore and experience the famous Saruru sunrise together.

Why Visit Saruru Beach?
Saruru Beach offers an off-the-beaten-path summer experience that combines natural beauty, community warmth, and local culture. Whether you’re pitching a tent steps from the shoreline, enjoying a hot shower after a swim, or participating in a beach festival, Saruru Beach is the perfect destination for a laid-back, coastal escape in Hokkaido.
Getting to Saruru Beach
The most convenient way to reach Saruru Beach is by rental or private car, especially if you're planning to explore the rural beauty of Hokkaido at your own pace. The roads are well-maintained, and driving allows easy access to nearby attractions as well.
While it's also possible to take a taxi from Mombetsu City, travelers should note that this option can be quite costly due to the distance and limited public transport options in the area. For a smoother and more budget-friendly experience, a car rental is highly recommended.
