10 Things to Do in Hokuto City

Hokuto (北斗市) is a city located in the Oshima Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan, established on February 1, 2006, through the merger of Kamiiso Town and Ono Town. The name "Hokuto" was chosen following a public suggestion process, with six proposals considered by the merger council. The final name, symbolizing a cluster of stars coming together, was selected to reflect the hope that the merging towns, Kamiiso and Ono, would unite to form a bright, unique city with individuality and potential for future growth.

For those planning to visit this city to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Hokuto City:

Hokuto City's manhole cover
Hokuto City's manhole cover

1. Take a picture of the manhole cover of Hokuto City. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover, which is common around the town. The colored version of it is displayed inside Shin Hakodate-Hokuto Station

意冨比神社
Itomihi Shrine

2. Visit the Itomihi Shrine (意冨比神社). It is one of the main shrines of Hokuto. You can visit at any time of day to offer your prayers and pay your respects. If you're collecting goshuin (shrine stamps), be sure to get one from this sacred site.

法亀寺
Hokkiji

3. Visit Hokkiji (法亀寺) in spring, particularly when the sakura flowers are in full bloom. You will be able to see the beauty of the temple’s lone Weeping Cherry Blossom, which is illuminated at night.

新函館北斗駅
Shin- Hakodate-Hokuto Station

4. Explore Shin Hakodate-Hokuto Station (新函館北斗駅). Aside from the Hokuto City colored manhole cover displayed there, you can also check out the Hokuto City Tourism Exchange Center exhibits. Don’t forget to take a photo of the bronze statue of Kenshiro from the anime “Fist of the North Star”.

松前藩戸切地陣屋跡
Matsumae Clan Hekirichi Jinya Ruins

5. Visit and explore the Matsumae Clan Hekirichi Jinya Ruins (松前藩戸切地陣屋跡), which is a historical landmark of the city. This place is also a popular destination in spring when the sakura trees are in full bloom.

東前温泉 しんわの湯
Shinwano Yu Onsen at Hotel Akitaya

6. Relax and unwind at the Shinwano Yu Onsen at Hotel Akitaya (東前温泉 しんわの湯), a casual hot spring inn offering a soothing onsen bathhouse and a sauna. In addition to the rejuvenating hot springs, the hotel features a restaurant and a beauty salon, making it the perfect place to relax, refresh, and indulge in some self-care. Whether you're soaking in the healing waters or enjoying a delicious meal, Shinwano Yu offers a complete wellness experience.

7. Pitch a tent and enjoy a night under the stars at Hokuto City Kijihikikogen Camping Ground (北斗市 きじひき高原キャンプ場). This campsite offers breathtaking panoramic views of Hokuto City and Hakodate City. During the day, you can take in the lush landscapes, while at night, the stunning city lights create a magical atmosphere. It’s an ideal spot for nature lovers, offering a peaceful escape and a chance to enjoy both serene views and the vibrant cityscape.

八郎沼公園
Hachironuma Park

8. Take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the scenic beauty at Hachironuma Park (八郎沼公園), a picturesque spot that’s perfect for nature lovers. The park is lovely in spring when its trees are in full bloom, making it a popular destination for hanami (cherry blossom viewing). In autumn, the trees surrounding the lake are beautifully illuminated, creating a stunning visual display that’s perfect for a peaceful evening walk. Whether visiting in spring or fall, Hachironuma Park offers a tranquil escape with breathtaking views year-round.

灯台の聖母トラピスト大修道院

9. Visit the Todainoseibo Trappist Dai Monastery (灯台の聖母トラピスト大修道院), a historic 19th-century red brick monastery that draws tourists for its delicious homemade butter, jam, and cookies, crafted by the resident monks. Known for its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful architecture, the monastery offers a unique glimpse into monastic life. Be sure to stop by and try the monastery's famous treats, which visitors love and make perfect souvenirs to take home.

大野川桜並木
Sakura Illumination at the Ono River Sakura Corridor

10. Experience Hokuto’s most popular Sakura Illumination at the Ono River Sakura Corridor (大野川桜並木), a stunning display of cherry blossoms illuminated at night. The best time to visit is around mid to late May when the Sakura trees are in full bloom, creating a magical atmosphere. During our visit, we were treated to live musical performances and a variety of food stalls, making it a lively and enjoyable experience for all. Don’t miss this beautiful celebration of spring!
