Shin Hakodate-Hokuto
Station, located in Hokuto City, Hokkaido, is a key stop on the Hokkaido
Shinkansen line, offering convenient access to the region’s stunning landscapes

crucial transfer point between conventional rail lines and the high-speed
Shinkansen, connecting travelers to Hakodate Station, which the Shinkansen does
not directly serve.

Shin Hakodate-Hokuto Station - Hokuto City, Hokkaido Prefecture |
The
history of the station dates back to the opening of a railway station in the
Ichinowatari area in 1902. Originally named "Hongo," the station was
renamed in 1942 to "Oshima Ono" after local villages merged. The
station’s name was later updated to its current title, Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto,
incorporating the name of Hokuto City while acknowledging the planned
"Shin-Hakodate" designation for the Shinkansen line. This new name
emerged after some debate between the neighboring cities of Hokuto and Hakodate
over what the station should be called.

The

15-meter-high glass wall that offers panoramic views of Mount Hakodate from the
second floor. Inside, local Hokkaido materials such as southern Hokkaido cedar
and Moheji bricks adorn the walls, giving the station a distinctly regional
feel. The station is equipped with various passenger-friendly services,
including a Green Window (Midori no Madoguchi) for ticketing, reserved seat
vending machines, and automated ticket gates. It is also the only station
outside Sapporo’s metropolitan area to feature a kiosk.

Team Nicerio visits Shin Hakodate-Hokuto Station
My
family and I visited Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station for the first time on April 3, 2023, the third day of our 3-day Birthday Road Trip. It also marked my 518th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. The night before, my daughter
and I had planned to see the Zushihokki Statue, but the station was already
closed, so we decided to return the following day to explore. During our visit,
we only had the chance to explore the Hokuto City Tourism Exchange Center, as
the rest of the station's facilities were still closed. It was a fun stop
before we hit the road again to continue the final leg of our trip.
