Hakodate shares several characteristics with Seattle, the birthplace of Starbucks, making it a perfect location for the company’s first store in the city. Both are vibrant port towns with scenic hills and bustling morning markets, while the design of the Nishi-Hatoba building and its harbor-facing location bear a striking resemblance to the first Starbucks store at Pike Place Market in Seattle. This connection adds a unique charm to the Starbucks Coffee Hakodate Bayside, offering a taste of the brand’s heritage alongside the beauty of Hakodate.

Sustainability at Its Core

One of the standout features of Starbucks Coffee Hakodate Bayside is its commitment to sustainability. The store has installed a pellet stove, designed to reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to environmental preservation. The stove uses pellet fuel made from thinned larch trees in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido, supporting local forestry efforts and helping combat global warming. Visitors can enjoy the calming atmosphere of the stove while sipping their coffee, making it an even more delightful experience.

On April 3, 2023, my family and I visited Starbucks Hakodate Bayside for the first time, marking the last day of our three-day “Birthday Road Trip.” It was also my 518th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. As huge fans of this popular coffee chain, we’re always drawn to Starbucks whenever we spot one during our road trips to get our usual coffee fix. What stood out about this particular branch was its stunning view of the harbor. The store’s beautiful exterior and interior left a lasting impression on us. I think Starbucks Hakodate Bayside ranks among Japan's most beautiful Starbucks locations.
