Shintotsukawa Town (
新十津川町) has a unique history as it was founded by a group of pioneers who left the island of Honshu in search of a better life. These pioneers faced many challenges as they settled in the harsh environment of Hokkaido. They had to clear forests, build homes and farms, and create a community from scratch. Despite these difficulties, they persevered and established a thriving town.

The Shintotsukawa Local History Museum was established to honor the contribution of these pioneers and to preserve their stories and artifacts for future generations. The exhibits include items such as tools, clothing, and household items used by the pioneers. The hall also features photographs, documents, and dioramas that depict the daily life and struggles of the pioneers.

Team Nicerio visits Shintotsukawa Local History Museum

My family and I visited Shintotsukawa Local History Museum for the first time during our road trip last August 27, 2022, which was my 43rd weekend here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. The timing of our visit was perfect as it suddenly rained when we were in town. Because of that, we stayed a bit longer and learned more about the history of Shintotsukawa from the plethora of historical artifacts displayed in the museum.
