Takikawa (滝川市) is a city in the Sorachi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. Takikawa City gets its name from the Ainu term "Sorapuchi," signifying the "area under the waterfall." Located along the mid-streams of the Sorachi River, this region boasts a unique topography with a small waterfall caused by a difference in elevation. The Ainu people aptly named it "Sorapuchipetsu" (Taki no kawa), meaning the "waterfall river," and hence, the area became known as Takikawa.

For those planning to visit the city of Takikawa to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Takikawa City:

Takikawa Manhole Cover

1. Take a picture of the manhole cover of Takikawa. So far, I have seen one unique manhole cover which is common in the Sakaemachi District. There was also a colored manhole cover inside the Takikawa Tourist Information Center but it was moved to Takikawa Town Hall according to the staff.


Takikawa Roadside Station

2. Visit the Takikawa Roadside Station and buy products that are produced or made in the town. You can also get the roadside station stamp here for the Hokkaido Stamp rally booklet.


Takikawa Shrine

3. Visit the Takikawa Shrine. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. You can also get a goshuin here.


Hokuden Park

4. Stroll around Hokuden Park. You would see the Centennial Memorial Tower however it has been closed to the public for some time now. Regardless, you would enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the park.


Takikawa City Golf Ground

5. Play golf at the 18-hole golf course Takikawa City Golf Ground. They offer discounts for senior citizens and also people with disabilities.


Takikawa City Folk Museum

6. Learn about the history of the reclamation of Takikawa City at the Takikawa City Folk Museum. Outside the museum is the restored D51 297 on display.

7. Learn about the history of Takikawa City at Takikawa Museum of Art and Natural History. The building is connected to the Takikawa City Children's Science Museum so it's a perfect family trip destination.


Furei no Sato

10. Head over to the Ebeotsucho District between May 20th and 28th to immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the Nanohana Festival. Be captivated by the mesmerizing sight of the vibrant yellow nanohana (rapeseed flowers) that blanket the area, creating a sea of golden hues.
