10 Things to Do in Chitose City

10 Things to Do in Chitose City

Chitose (千歳市) is a city in the Ishikari Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. Chitose was originally named shikot in the Ainu language, which means "big depression or hollow," similar to Lake Shikotsu, which is a caldera lake. This sounded too much like dead bones (死骨, shikotsu) in Japanese, so it was altered to Chitose.

For those planning to visit Chitose City to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Chitose:

Chitose City manhole covers

1. Take a picture of the manhole cover of Chitose City. So far, I have seen one unique manhole cover which is expected in the city. There is a colored version of this installed in front of Michinoeki Salmon Park Chitose.

Chitose Roadside Station

2. Visit the Chitose Roadside Station / Michinoeki Salmon Park Chitose and buy products that are produced or made in the town. You can also get the roadside station stamp here for the Hokkaido Stamp rally booklet. This roadside station is known for the salmon that swim up the Chitose River during the breeding season in the autumn.

Chitose Shrine

3. Visit the Chitose Shrine. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. You can also get a goshuin here.

Poropinai Observatory

4. Make a stopover at Poropinai Observatory along Route 453 and enjoy the view of Lake Shikotsu.

Fujiya Onsen

5. Take a dip at the onsen of Fujiya Onsen. The establishment is for day bathers and is very affordable. Aside from that, it is just in the outskirts of the city proper making it a great place to visit if you want to freshen up before leaving or visiting Chitose.

Salmon Hometown Chitose Aquarium

6. Visit the Salmon Hometown Chitose Aquarium and learn about the life cycle of the salmon. If you visit during the autumn breeding season, you can watch hundreds of salmon swim up and the Chitose River to lay eggs.

5. Visit the Pokemon Store New Chitose Airport and buy the limited edition store exclusive Pilot and Cabin Attendant Pikachu.

New Chitose Airport

4. Explore New Chitose Airport before or after your flight. Surprisingly, there are plenty of things to see there like the Airport History Museum, Sky Museum, Royce Chocolate World, and many more.

Morappu Camping Site

3. Pitch up your own tent at the picturesque Morappu Camping Site. Delight in the breathtaking vista of the glistening lake as you immerse yourself in the serenity of nature.

Mt. Fuppushi

2. Embark on an exhilarating adventure by conquering the rugged trails of Mt. Fuppushi. While this hike presents a formidable challenge, the rewards are immeasurable. Reach the summit and be rewarded with an awe-inspiring, panoramic view of the majestic Lake Shikotsu.

Lake Shikotsu

1. Experience a captivating day at Lake Shikotsu, where endless opportunities for adventure and exploration await you. Immerse yourself in the tranquil ambiance of the lakeside as you embark on a remarkable journey of discovery. Start your day by venturing out onto the glistening waters in a kayak, gliding along the serene surface and allowing the beauty of the surroundings to envelop you. Feel a sense of freedom as you navigate through the picturesque landscape, taking in the breathtaking views of the lake and its pristine shores.

I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Chitose City gave you an idea and inspiration to visit one of Hokkaido's main gateways soon.
