Smile Park - Hokkaido

Smile Park (スマイルパーク) is a vast public park in the outskirts of the Satsunai District of the town of Makubetsu. It is located at Senju in the town of Makubetsu, Nakagawa District, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan.

At the heart of the park stands the Centennial Memorial Hall, a landmark that symbolizes Makubetsu’s proud history and continuous development. On the eastern side lies the Mack the Mack Research Institute, which is dedicated to studying and promoting the unique culture of Makubetsu.

To the west, you’ll find the Satsunai Sports Center and the Tokachi Education and Training Center, both offering excellent facilities for sports, workshops, and various community events. These buildings highlight Smile Park’s role as an educational and cultural hub in the Tokachi region.

Park Features and Outdoor Spaces

A broad grassy area extends along National Route 38 on the southern side, providing a peaceful green space perfect for walking, picnicking, or simply enjoying the open air. On the northern side, visitors can try their hand at the park golf course, a favorite pastime among Hokkaido residents that combines elements of golf and croquet and is suitable for all ages.

One of the most recognizable features within Smile Park is the Mother and Calf Naumann Elephant Statue. This sculpture commemorates the prehistoric Naumann elephant, whose fossils were discovered in the area. The statue serves as a reminder of Makubetsu’s deep connection to natural history and regional pride. A matching pair of statues can also be seen in Naumann Park, located in the Churui District of Makubetsu, symbolically linking the two parks.

Team Nicerio visits Smile Park

My family and I visited Smile Park for the first time on November 5, 2023, the third day of our three-day Culture Day Road Trip. This also marked my 734th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. The park was our first destination for the day. We enjoyed strolling around it and also taking pictures with the Mother and Calf Naumann Statues.

Smile Park Admission Fee

Entry to Smile Park is FREE, allowing visitors to explore and enjoy the grounds at no cost. However, some facilities, including the campground, museum, and park golf course, require separate admission fees.

Smile Park Operating Hours

Smile Park is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, individual facilities within the park have their own operating hours, so please check them separately before visiting.

Getting to Smile Park

 

Smile Park is 1.2 kilometers away from Satsunai Station.

However, if you're coming from Obihiro Station, you should head to platform 7 of the Obihiro Station bus terminal and board the 17 Obihiro Rikubetsu Line operated by the Tokachi Bus Company.

Get off at Makubetsu hyakunen kinen horu mae bus stop. Once there, walk for about 150 meters to Smile Park.
