Ikeda Station (池田駅) is a train station on the JR Nemuro Line. It is located at Higashi 1 Jo in the town of Ikeda, Nakagawa District, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan.

Ikeda Station, located in the town of Ikeda in Hokkaido, is more than just a stop along the railway—it’s a historic landmark that has played a central role in the region’s development for over a century. Serving as a key management station for the area, it oversees all stations between Makubetsu and Toyokoro, making it an essential hub for travelers and locals alike.

A Century of History

Ikeda Station has a rich history that dates back to December 15, 1904, when it was established with the opening of the Hokkaido Government Railway between Tobetsu and Urahoro, alongside the Ikeda Locomotive Depot. In 1910, the Abashiri Line opened, connecting Ikeda to Rikubetsu Station, prompting an expansion of the station building and the addition of an overpass. The station witnessed significant events during wartime, including damage to the locomotive depot during an air raid in 1945.

A modern steel-framed station building was completed on January 3, 1961, and after the privatization of Japanese National Railways, Ikeda Station became part of the JR Hokkaido network in 1987. In 1989, the Abashiri Line was converted into the Furusato Ginga Line, which operated until its discontinuation in 2006. The station continues to embrace local culture, introducing a music box ticket gate in 2010 featuring a tune by Ikeda native Miwa Yoshida of DREAMS COME TRUE.

Most recently, on March 15, 2025, the outbound express Ohzora No. 7 bound for Kushiro will pass through Ikeda Station, marking the first regular passenger train through the station in 28 years.

Facilities and Services

The current station building, rebuilt in 1961, is a single-story steel-framed structure covering 427.3 square meters. It features a Midori no Madoguchi (Green Window) for ticketing and a talking ticket machine, making travel more convenient for all passengers. The station is staffed and functions as a management hub for the surrounding stations.

Team Nicerio Visits Ikeda Station

My family and I visited Ikeda Station for the first time on November 5, 2023, the third day of our three-day Culture Day Road Trip. This visit also marked my 734th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. With some extra time to spare, we stopped by Ikeda Station to collect its eki stamp, and my wife and I enjoyed taking photos with the giant cork displayed outside the station.
